Did you ever have a friend that you just knew would be with you all your life? I’m not talking about the casual aquaintance, I mean a REAL friend— one who knows you – the good, the bad and the ugly parts. I have one of those people in my life. No matter where life has taken us so far, no matter where it will take us in the future, I know that I can count on him to always be in my life. Now, granted, sometimes he has been on the edge of my world, and in the past he has been at the center. But although life has changed us and given us different paths, he is always in my heart. Whenever I think of Abe, I am always struck by the fact that we have known each other for over 20 years, that we are still friends, that he is still the same great guy – life has not changed him – just made him better.
I met him on September 3rd – this, by the way, is a date we each remember each year, and each year there is an unspoken contest to see who can contact who first to say Happy September 3rd, (which I believe I have now officially won two years in a row). Childish — isn’t it –but oh so fun! Anyway — we met at a football game in high school — had Chemistry class together and since that day, he has always been an important person in my life. Friends are rare these days – I am so happy he is my friend. He lives across the country, but honestly, sometimes I feel he is closer — he lives in my mind, and my soul. I always refer to him as my memory – because he has a mind that remembers EVERYTHING! He can tell you what type of lunchbox he had in the first grade…I would bet a Starbucks coffee on it. If I need the words to a song, or the singer of a certain song, or the name of a person from high school – he is the one I call. It is nice to have a friend isn’t it? I miss having him around more often, I miss not talking to him on a more frequent basis, but he told me reads this blog – so maybe, just maybe I will get to wish him Happy September 3rd personally this year.
Just a note: For those of you interested in coincidences – let me say first that I don’t believe in coincidences – I believe that God has a plan and nothing is trivial. But here are some interesting facts.
- Abe’s Dad came to America from India on September 3rd
- Abe and Bev met on September 3rd
- Bev brought her daughter home from the hospital on September 3rd.
- The couple who helped Bev & Hubby meet with their daughter’s birthfamily adopted their own little girl on September 3rd (20 years earlier)
September 3rd is an important day in my life. Do you have an important day like that in your life? Do you have a friend that you can celebrate with in all the little things of life? I hope so. We all need friends. Parents and family can come and go, spouses can come and go – but there is nothing like a great friendship, rooted in memories and time and nourished with shared experiences and a lifetime of love.
So, here’s to Abe on our 24th Friendship Anniversary – and here’s to 24 more!
Happy September 3rd!
